Chali 2na has done it all. From his days growing up on the hardscrabble streets of Chicago’s south side, to his subsequent explosion onto Los Angeles’ burgeoning hip-hop scene, to his tenure as MC for seminal hip-hop group Jurassic 5, Chali epitomizes the portrait of a 21st century artist.

To be sure, with his unmistakable, beloved baritone, Chali has firmly established himself as one of the most distinctive, charismatic personalities not just in hip-hop, but music in general.

Only a select few can say they’ve rocked microphones in front of thousands at a sold-out arena in Tokyo with Jurassic 5, spit rhymes at Lollapalooza, painted professional caliber oil color paintings in their California home and lent their distinctive bass-heavy voice, to such mega-brands as Coca Cola and Sega Dreamcast.

Now, buoyed by the wide spectrum of socio-cultural and geographical influences that have shaped him—hip-hop’s Renaissance man released his first solo album Fish Outta Water on Decon Records in the spring of 2009.

Indeed, this deeply personal body of work reveals a side of the long time Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli front man that his fans have never seen, a story from start to finish of his life, loves, triumphs and let downs, weaving in a powerful selection of beats from the likes of Scott Storch and Jake 1 and memorable appearances from Damian “Jr. Gong” and Stephen Marley, Anthony Hamilton, Beanie Man and others.

“I wanted this album to expose who I am as an artist. The majority of people know me from Jurassic 5 and Ozo, but I felt like nobody knew me as an artist,” Chali says. “I want to show you all facets of who I am. Man. Husband. Brother. Father. Son. Painter.”

Indeed, Chali’s diverse tastes—from the blues he was raised on to the political gangsta’ rap he loved to the graffiti art he sprayed as a teenager—flow from this album, like the oil colors Chali uses for his paintings.

There’s the Fury-produced,“Righteous Way,” an interpolation of Curtis Mayfield’s “The Makings Of You,” where Chali tells the story of his life through the eyes of his father, his 17 year- old son and himself.

Or the Scott Storch driven “Love Is Gonna Get You,” where Chali offers up his own take on the fabled KRS-One song that inspired this 21st century version.

“KRS was talking about how love was going to engulf his brother. This song talks about how love makes you do the strangest things, how it infects your heart and changes you forever,” he said.

Of course, no body of work involving Chali 2na would be complete without his trademark, articulate, spitfire rhymes, the sort of fearsome battle raps which first caught the ear of so many back when he honed his skills in Los Angeles’ storied underground hip-hop scene of the early nineties.

On “Don’t Stop,” featuring the ever soulful Anthony Hamilton, Chali beckons everyone– from revolutionaries to thugs to dime pieces–to leave their troubles at home over a melodic, flute-infused hook.

“Getting sick of the bickering from my peers and such. Bringing lyrics to keep your ears in touch,” he rhymes, daring anyone to test his mettle while playfully requesting that you too take your body to the dance floor in the same breath.

Indeed, Chali’s debut features a seemingly endless litany of groundbreaking tracks, which touch on topics the veteran musician has never bared to his listeners before. Whether it’s the trauma he experienced from the shooting death of a childhood friend to the twists and turns of his own family lineage, to the resistance to injustice that has always been imbued in Chali’s music, Fish Outta Water, is quite simply, a life’s worth of songs in the making.

Says Chali: “I want to free people’s asses and let their minds follow. To not be preachy, but to make them aware of what I’m about. I want to enlighten, but I ain’t trying to be a bumper sticker either.”

No doubt, there’s still plenty of fire in Chali’s lyrical arsenal. His days of training at the legendary Los Angeles hotspot, the Good Life Café, have taught him well. Only now, he’s fused the bass-heavy bravado with his own life’s story, and in doing so, creates an album of work that’s not only superb, it’s important.

If you were to Google the name Araabmuzik, you would discover a lot video's showing this music producer hammering on an MPC as if he was Travis Barker on the drums. With his fast rhythmic touches on the machine - while donning a New Era fitted, some might call it poetry in motion, others might say it's suicide on an MPC, but for the Dipset in-house producer it's just another day on the job.

Born Abraham Orellana in Providence, RI, the middle child of two other siblings, he grew up with an affection to music starting at a very young age. "I've been drumming since the age of 3. When I was around 10, I started getting into keyboard and producing my own music." Half Dominican and Guatemalan, he confesses that his Hispanic heritage has influenced his music to a degree. With his mom being a one-time professional singer he's been around melodies and beats his entire life, however; growing up in Providence... it's natural to assume Hip-Hop not having much of an influence in the city, considering that's it sprawled so far away in New England. "There's definitely a lot of Hip-Hop here. You'll find a lot of local rap groups, solo artists out here that are trying make it, it's just the fact that we're not on the map like that just yet." Having found much success working with Dipset members Cam'Ron, Duke Da God, Hell Rell and others, he's also shopped beats to Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Cassidy, Gucci Man, Young Dro and Fabolous. With his rapid beat making techniques, it's easy to understand why it's getting him on shows from state to state because it's amazing to see. "I've been getting booked by clubs lately to do shows performing on my MPC live. It's something different, unique and it puts me in a position to be a trendsetter, but on the other hand - it's allowing other producers in the crowd to hear my sound and see what I'm doing, but I don't think you can really duplicate what I'm doing." Putting a name on how to define his music and style is a daunting task, but under the fabric of his beats still lies a blueprint from the influences of Dr. Dre, Swizz Beats, Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, Hi-Tek, DJ Khalil and Beatmakers. These famous producers vicariously helped in perfecting his craft to the point now that it's a full time job. "When I first started making beats, I went from the keyboard to a software program and to an MPC. My motivation at that time was just for the fact that I wanted to hear and make my own music. All my old beats on the keyboard where like a good 3-4 minutes long and as I got better, so did the beats." Not really needing much for motivation when making a new beats is natural. "I'm not the type that needs to smoke a blunt or have a drink to be creative. "I just sit down and think of what I'm going to do or how I'm going to do it. It doesn't take long - no more than ten minutes for me to complete a beat. It's always like 10-15 minutes the most and then I'm done."

As his talents continue to move him forward, don't ever think leaving his hometown is in the plans. "Growing up in Providence, I was blessed because I didn't have to go through a lot of the things that other people that I know in places like Boston and New York had to go through. I was raised by both my mom and my pops and their still together this day. Besides, it doesn't matter where I'm from just so long as the people keep liking my beats that's all that matters."

Corey Woods aka Raekwon The Chef, has been a staple in the Entertainment industry since his debut in 1993 as an integral part in undeniably one of the greatest Hip-Hop groups to date, the legendary Wu-Tang Clan. Rae’s verbal ability took center stage early in the original cult classic Protect Ya Neck, but little did the world know, that we were merely indulging in delicious appetizers delivered by Rae. It wasn’t until 1995, when Raekwon The Chef emerged from the kitchen and invited the Hip-Hop faithful into his personal chamber and the world was privileged to partake in the perfectly sautéed full course meal… Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Critics and fans alike unanimously agreed, Cuban Linx was an instant classic. An opulent sonic journey defined by Raekwon’s cinematic narratives and narcotized hooks. The production delivered by Wu Tang’s Abbot, The Rza, was simply supreme – his best comprehensive work to date. And never had a co-star been so illustrious: Cuban Linx also managed to showcase the talents of then under represented Wu-Tang band mate, Ghostface Killah. This was also the beginning of the “Rae and Ghost” collaborations which have yielded some of hip hop’s most beloved songs.

To follow up this success, Rae later released Immobiliarity in 1999 and The Lex Diamond Story in 2003. All of these lyrical offerings were well received; Immobilarity going gold, yet there was always the persistent request of the fans to release a follow up to the classis OBFCL. After anticipation and some label turbulence, The Chef finally found a new home at the EMI Group. The seasoned label has joined forces with Raekwon and his independent label, Ice H2O Records Inc. to power the sequel to his 1995 masterpiece: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

No one could have anticipated the break away success of this album. Released on September 8, 2009, the instant success spent its first four days number one on itunes. Then selling 66, 000 copies in its first week on the charts . Critics and fans both heralded it the best album of 2009. PETER JACKSON:

As Canadians continue to push the idea that “Hip Hop isn’t dead...It lives in the North” most people expect to discover talent in some of the big cities like Toronto, Vancouver and even the east coast town of St. John’s. But when talking about pounding beats and lyrical rhymes, very few would think of Oshawa, Ontario. It may seem an unlikely place to find Canada’s next hip-hop star, but when you look at the cultural make-up of the city of Oshawa itself, it bears a striking resemblance to an American city that has birthed a handful of top emcees. Detroit, Michigan. Both Oshawa & Detroit are the headquarters for General Motors in their respective countries, both have high crime rates and both have spawned some pretty decent white boys that can rhyme. Detroit, Michigan has Eminem and Oshawa, Ontario has Peter Jackson.

Twenty-four year old rapper, Peter Jackson, now based in the Durham region, was born and raised in Ajax, Ontario, a small suburb just outside of Toronto. Jackson initially became attracted to the rap industry in his teens. What started as a childhood hobby of freestyling in friends’ basements soon became an obsession. While Jackson would have to struggle to gain respect for his talent in a town that was better known for its punk bands, such as Sum41 he soon began to make a name for himself. This once “less than ambitious” high school student was now dedicating his time to studying the dictionary in order to expand his vocabulary. It wasn’t long before this basement hobby developed into a full-fledged passion and career.

Peter Jackson always believed that Hip Hop was his life and was determined to convince other to believe in his dream as much as he did. Jackson knew that if he was to survive in this industry he was going to have to take to the pavement himself to make it happen. Today he is not just an artist who has recorded hundreds of songs, or toured as the supporting artist for legendary rappers, he also boasts a promotions company and a clothing line. Peter Jackson and his team 90Nickel are not just a group of rapper they are a local Hip-Hop franchise.

To date Jackson has been a supporting act for artists such as, Wu Tang, Youngblooz, Obie Trice, Llyod Banks, Rupee, Ray J, Drake, Rich Boy, Kardinal Offishall, Joe Budden, Enur, Dip Set, Beenie Man, KRS One, Nas, and The Clipse. He has also hosted parties with names like, Mad Linx, Tiffany, Jayde Nicole, Cabbie on the Street, Matte Babel and Leah Miller of Much Music, Scott Boogie and Devo Brown Flow 93.5, Danny Fernandes, Mr. Vegas, and Shemar Moore. He has also collaborated on tracks with artists ranging from local talent Nikki Awesome, to D12 and most recently Treach of Naughty by Nature. In November of 2008, Peter Jackson was asked to be a part of the cross-Canada “Never say Never” Tour opening for D12, Joe Budden, Royce da 5’9 and Classified. After receiving great reviews Jackson was quickly sent back across the country in March of 2009 to open for Hip Hop superstars Naughty by Nature. And in the summer of 2009, Jackson is set to once again tour Canada with G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and DJ Whoo Kidd.

Peter Jackson has appeared on over 50 mixed tapes in North America working with names such as, DJ Rated R, Potent Product, DJ Diggz, DJ Dollah $, and more. He released his own mixed tape titled, Business as Usual hosted by DJ G-Spot of Shadyville DJ fame in 2007. Jackson quickly followed it up with two more compilations, Fly Society, featuring fellow 90Nickle member, and Hustler’s Tears, both hosted by DJ Bedz, the Denver Nuggets official DJ, and Denver, Colorado’s Shadyville DJ. In 2008, Jackson began working with executive producer Sheldon Moore, who has years of experience working with artists such as Citizen Kaine, K-OS, Big Pun, Jahiem. Together they produced and released Peter Jackson’s first EP titled, The Introduction, with features from Jmore, Emmerson Just Brooks, Toya Lexus and Royce da 5’9. The first single from the EP, Come on Over, featuring Jmore is currently receiving radio rotation across Canada after being picked up by Toronto’s Flow 93.5 FM. Jackson is in studio recording his first full length album which is expected to be released in November of 2009.

This young artist is tenacious and determined. His lyrics are insightful and he is willing to challenge the boundaries of the Rap and Hip Hop industry we know today. At times his rhymes are hard and unapologetic, but he can also captivate a club with a beat and an unforgettable hook. But perhaps the most lasting impression Jackson leaves is his humility. While he has become a local celebrity he is never shy to remind fans and critics alike, where he came from and how he got to where he is today. In Jackson’s own words, “It’s a team effort. I couldn’t have done any of this without my family, my boys or the support from my hometown.”

On March 26, 2002, K-OS released his debut album Exit in Canada to critical acclaim. The United States release followed the next year on January 28, '03. The album incorporated several music styles, and was described as a "carefully blended pastiche of hip-hop, soul, rock, R&B, and a touch of reggae" by Stylus Magazine. Billboard Magazine called the album "One of the finest hip-hop records Canada has ever produced."The first single and promotional track for the album was "Heaven Only Knows". Like the "Musical Essence" single, the video for "Heaven Only Knows" was sponsored by a VideoFACT grant. The second single, "Superstarr Pt. Zero," was then released, which won "Best Music Video" award at the 2003 Urban X-Posure Awards.

On August 9, 2010, K-OS released a follow-up mixtape to Yes!, entitled The Anchorman Mixtape. Mainly recorded on his tour bus, it featured leftover tracks from Yes!, as well as new tracks. On October 4, 2011, K-OS released his MTV Unplugged recording. This album also features two new songs, "Sprayin' My Pen", and a new version of "Faith" featuring Drake.

When MC’s Suffa and Pressure met at Blackwood high school in the hills of Adelaide, South Australia they formed a friendship built around their Common love of Music. When they were later introduced to DJ Debris they knew they’d found someone who shared their passion. The three Conspired to add their own chapter to hip hop’s canon - they formed Hilltop Hoods, and set out to represent their world.

In 1997 the Hoods dropped their first release, an EP called ‘Back Once Again’. Since then their journey has paralleled the path of the music they love - both the Hoods and Australian Hip Hop have exponentially grown in popularity over the past 10+ years.

A big part of Hilltop Hoods success can be credited to their reputation as formidable live performers. The crew is repeatedly singled out as one of Australia’s hottest live acts by media, industry insiders and fans alike. Countless sold-out national tours and standout festival appearances at Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass and The Falls Festival have confirmed their local drawing power while performances in England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, New Zealand, Korea, Switzerland and Germany have proven they can take their sound to the global stage.

Although their first success came in 2003, in form of the huge hit ‘The Nosebleed Section’, the real turning point in their career came in the form of ‘The Hard Road’ (2006). ‘The Hard Road’ debuted at Number One on the ARIA album chart and went on to become the group’s second Platinum certified album (the first being ‘The Calling’). As well as winning two ARIA Awards for the album the group were also recipients of the coveted J Award.

In 2007 the Hoods’ (with the assistance of composer Jamie Messenger) created ‘The Hard Road Restrung’ – an experimental remix album that melded Hip Hop with classical music. This unique project culminated in a performance alongside the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to a sold out crowd at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre (7500 cap). ‘The Hard Road Restrung’ went on to attain Gold certification, and take home the 2007 ARIA Award for Best Urban Release.

In 2009 the Hoods’ dropped their 5th studio album ‘State of the Art’. It debuted at Number One on the ARIA album chart, where it spent two weeks. The album was certified Gold on the day of its release and certified Platinum a week later. A year on the album had the honour of becoming the biggest selling Australian Hip Hop record of all time when it was certified Double Platinum. Along the way it picked up ARIA’s for Best Urban Release and Best Engineer as well as an APRA award for Best Urban Work.

With these exceptional accolades, Hilltop Hoods have not only risen to the top of Australian Hip Hop, but have earned themselves a place at the very forefront of the Australian music industry. Retaining their integrity, the Hoods have stayed true to their musical roots and it’s paid dividends.

2010 finds the Hoods’ focusing on Golden Era Records, their very own record label. The label recently signed newcomer Briggs and local stalwarts The Funkoars, with more announcements on the way. 2010 also finds the Hoods releasing their third DVD - ‘Parade of the Dead’. The film brings together live music and zombies in a way that is, if nothing else original. ‘Parade of the Dead’ will be in stores in October, just in time for Halloween.

SWEATSHOP UNION:

Sweatshop Union is the undisputed heavyweight of North Western hip-hop, and has earned a reputation as the hardest working collective in the region. Having performed over five hundred shows internationally, their live performance has become a mainstay of Canadian music.

In 2002, a concept album was recorded called: Sweatshop Union. The record was released internationally on Battle Axe Records and the new group began their relentless touring schedule that has proven to be a key catalyst in their success.

The next three records solidified Sweatshop Union‘s presence in rap music. The group co-signed to EMI and went out on the road touring with the Black Eyed Peas, Swollen Members and the Living Legends as well as opening shows for Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, and The Roots. Both college and commercial radio gave the albums substantial airtime and soon after came nominations for Juno Awards, a Canadian Radio Music Award, Much Music Video Awards and more. By 2006 Sweatshop Union had begun headlining shows in the U.S. and appearing at major festivals across North America.

Recently, URB Magazine featured them in their next top 100. They’re not alone in thinking that Sweatshop Union is a band worth keeping an eye on. Their consistently poignant music continues to become more relevant daily and the group shows no signs of slowing down.

March 1st marked the release of the groups most ambitious record to date, There's nothing else like it. Bill says so. The experimental concept album is best described as a runaway mushroom trip through the cosmos. Call it outer space jukebox music.

“I Am Hip-Hop”

When it comes to Hip Hop, no one has been as consistent and influential as KRS-One. It is impossible to discuss Hip Hop’s history without discussing KRS-One. His reputation as both a live performer and as Hip Hop’s resident “Teacha” has reached mythic proportions.

Throughout his 20 year career trajectory legendary pioneer Kris Parker who goes by the pseudonym KRS-One (Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone) has given fans over a dozen classic Hip-Hop albums, spoke at more then 500 universities/colleges including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Spelman, Howard and Oxford, been nominated for Grammy Awards, received multiple RIAA certified gold and platinum sales accolades and become the definitive source for conscious urban music. Nicknamed “The Teacha” the New York native and acclaimed MC has been honored by the United Nations, Billboard Magazine, The Source, BET Hip-Hop Awards, VH-1’s Hip-Hop Honors and Harvard University to name a few. He has been given the keys to the city in Kansas City, Philadelphia and Compton, was nominated for the NACA 1992 Harry Chapman Humanitarian Award, holds the Reebok Humanitarian Award and three Ampex Golden Reel Awards. KRS One is viewed as the embodiment of the philosophical, sociological and political worldview espoused originally by those that participate in Hip Hop’s culture. He is presently one of the most outspoken leaders of Hip Hop’s politics and tradition. His integration of Hip Hop and metaphysical knowledge resonates throughout his music, lectures, and writings as his powerful presence continues to inspire generations. As Rolling Stone once put it, “He’s one of the most influential lyricists of all time.”

Born in New York in the 1960’s and raised by his single mother, Kris quickly learned how to take care of himself on the “streets” as his family shuffled between Brooklyn, Harlem and the Bronx throughout the 1970’s. Sometime around 1981 the young teenager left home to pursue his purpose as a philosopher/emcee. He would use the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza for shelter and learning. As part of the homeless population, Kris would venture onto the 3rd Street/Bowery shelter as well as the 166th Street & Boston Road shelter in the Bronx where in 1985 Kris would fatefully meet a social worker, Scott Sterling a.k.a DJ Scott La Rock and the two of them would form the renowned rap group Boogie Down Productions. Tragically, the duo only made one album together Criminal Minded (“an unadulterated classic and the template for all subsequent gangsta rap” according to Rolling Stone) when Scott La Rock was fatally shot trying to break up a street dispute. Long before the slayings of Tupac Shakur, Christopher 'Notorious B.I.G' Wallace and Jam Master Jay it was Scott La Rock who became hip-hop’s first martyr to senseless violence. With the death of his close friend Kris became even more inspired to reach an echelon where he could offer words of change. The New York Times once noted, “Kris Parker's rise from homelessness to stardom, and from stardom to academic respectability, took a mere three years.”

In 1987 Afrika Bambaataa called a historic meeting at the Latin Quarter night club where he urged the Hip Hop community to become more politically and socially active. Personally influenced by the meeting, KRS-One went to work releasing a 12" single entitled “Stop The Violence.” The popularity of this song gave rise to a swelling community of conscious Hip Hop. Then in 1989, KRS-One and author/musicologist Nelson George, developed an all-star project that would become a legendary Hip Hop peace anthem, “Self-Destruction”. The recording boldly denounced Black-on-Black violence with memorable verses from the likes of Kool Moe Dee, “I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan and I shouldn't have to run from a black man.” It was in the same year that KRS One inaugurated The Stop the Violence Movement (STVM), a non-profit organization deeply rooted in the Hip Hop community with a mission to advance an ongoing series of movements to diminish global violence through education, critical dialogue, grassroots organizing and direct action. It’s mission was to provide organized programs, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns that would heighten the awareness of the effects of violence, creating multi-generational forums and supplying parents and youth oriented educational tools for conflict resolution. This past year (2008) in response to the increased violence and confusion, KRS-One revitalized the Stop The Violence Movement, calling upon the global Hip Hop community to take responsibility for the way in which conflict is resolved. Active members and participants include 50 Cent, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Busta Rhymes, Cassidy, Channel Live, Chingy, Doug E. Fresh, Dr. Cornell West, Fat Joe, Immortal Technique, Jamel Shabazz, Just Ice, KRS-One, Ludacris, Martin Luther King III, MC Lyte, Mele Mel, Pastor Troy, Rick Ross, Talib Kweli, Whodini as well as various professional athletes and notable figures.

The prodigious talent has released fifteen classic Rap albums; Criminal Minded (1987), By All Means Necessary (1988), Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hiphop (1989), Edutainment (1990), Sex and Violence (1992), Return of the Boom Bap (1994), KRS-ONE (1995), I Got Next (1997), A Retrospective (2000), Sneak Attack (2001), Spiritual Minded (2002), Prophets vs. Profits;The Mix Tape (2003), D.I.G.I.T.A.L (2003), Kristyles (2003), Keep Right (2004), LIFE (2006), Hip Hop Lives (2007), Adventures in Emceein (2007) and Maximum Strength (2008). In 1997 he reached #3 on the Billboard charts with the hit "Step into a World (Rapture's Delight)" featuring a remix by P. Diddy and has since collaborated with a string of artists running the gamut of R.E.M and Ziggy Marley to Chuck D and EPMD.

Vibe Magazine hails KRS-One as the “Bronx Hip Hop Ambassador” and he continues his reign, delivering rhymes to a host of upcoming projects including The Game (L.A.X), L.L. Cool J (Exit 13), Talib Kweli (Prisoner of Conscious), Planet Asia (Pain Language), DJ Revolution (King of the Decks), EPMD (We Mean Business), Buckshot (Conflosation), Fat Joe (The Elephant in the Room), Freddie Foxxx (Royalty Check), MC Lyte (Back to Lyte & Almost September), Alchemist (Chemical Warfare), Melky Jean (Care for Haiti) as well as tracks alongside Grandmaster Flash, Channel Live, Rahzel, Redman, Sadat X & Lord Jamal and Tony Touch. An accomplished author, KRS One has published two prolific books including; The Science of Rap (1995) and Ruminations (2003) which Black Issues Book Review praised as, “a comprehensive tome, part self-help, part manifesto. Conducting probing, piercing metaphysical inquiries on everything, including government, religion, the music industry.” In March 2009 KRS One will release the anticipated The Gospel of Hip Hop through his own imprint “I Am Hip-Hop” through Power House Books Publishing. Acknowledging that KRS One is a walking embodiment of the cultural practices and moral philosophies of true Hip Hop, the imprint will serve as an outlet for creative expressions of his vibrant and lasting culture. He has crisscrossed the globe numerous times since Coachella 2002, chalking up tons of rave reviews along the way. He returned to Coachella 2010, for his 4th appearance at the festival headlining the Sahara Tent “Even against two of the biggest draws on the schedule, Z-Trip raked ‘em in, filling the Sahara with over 15,000 revelers,” Daily News. His recent Detroit Electronic Music Festival performance to over 10,000 stole the festival receiving the lions share of press; “Z-Trip lit up Saturday night, first by jamming with RJD2 then following with a Detroit-saluting mash-up set”- Billboard 2009. Most Friday nights you can find him at his new residency at Rain inside The Palms, Las Vegas. Entitled “Z-Trip’s Revolution” He has thrilled crowds there with his genre bending skills and surprise guests including Too Short, De La Soul , Rev Run and Three 6 Mafia.

Worldwide sold out shows would be enough for most DJs, but not Z-Trip. Please do not call him a celebrity DJ. His career is too full of impressive producer/artist milestones for that. In 2009, Z-Trip appeared as an in game character in DJ Hero; for which he also supplied several original remixes and songs. In 2009 “Victory Lap” his last album did over 500,000 copies. “Victory Lap” (his homage to Obama) was reviewed favorably and recommended by Wired, Urb, BPM, and XLR8R to name a few. Z-Trip’s longtime friend and collaborator Shepard Fairey supplied the art.

Z-Trip’s major label debut “Shifting Gears” was given 4 stars by Rolling Stone, in 2005. Shifting Gears featured Top 10 singles in the US and abroad. With appearances from many of Z-Trip’s friends; Chuck D, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Murs and Soup of Jurassic 5.

“Uneasy Listening” was his first record to receive critical acclaim and helped propel Z-Trip to national attention in 2002. It made album of the year lists in Spin, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Wired and XLR8R.

Sweatshop Union is the undisputed heavyweight of North Western hip-hop, and has earned a reputation as the hardest working collective in the region. Having performed over five hundred shows internationally, their live performance has become a mainstay of Canadian music.

In 2002, a concept album was recorded called: Sweatshop Union. The record was released internationally on Battle Axe Records and the new group began their relentless touring schedule that has proven to be a key catalyst in their success.

The next three records solidified Sweatshop Union‘s presence in rap music. The group co-signed to EMI and went out on the road touring with the Black Eyed Peas, Swollen Members and the Living Legends as well as opening shows for Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, and The Roots. Both college and commercial radio gave the albums substantial airtime and soon after came nominations for Juno Awards, a Canadian Radio Music Award, Much Music Video Awards and more. By 2006 Sweatshop Union had begun headlining shows in the U.S. and appearing at major festivals across North America.

Recently, URB Magazine featured them in their next top 100. They’re not alone in thinking that Sweatshop Union is a band worth keeping an eye on. Their consistently poignant music continues to become more relevant daily and the group shows no signs of slowing down.

March 1st marked the release of the groups most ambitious record to date, an experimental concept album best described as a runaway mushroom trip through the inner and outer cosmos. They titled the record simply: Bill Murray. Along with recent releases from Sweatshop Unions’ Dirty Circus and Pigeon Hole, the group aims to become the most prolific collective in hip hop.

SCRATCH:

When the human beatbox first caught the public eye in the early '80s, it was treated like a fad, ready to disappear with the next strong breeze. However, it survived, and Philly's Scratch has emerged as one of its masters. A no-frills percussion machine born to replicate the backbeat sound, he helped to keep the art form alive into its third decade. Born in Camden, NJ, one of the United States' most violent cities of the late 20th century, Scratch moved to Philadelphia in his youth, both to escape the violence and to make his mark on the city's fertile hip-hop scene. While showing off his skills in the mid-'90s with the local group Schoolz of Thought, Scratch caught the eye of Philly's chieftains and leading international hip-hop innovators, The Roots crew. He earned a showcase track "? Vs. Scratch" on the 1996 smash LP Illadelph Halflife, where he battled the Roots' world-class drummer ?uestlove to a draw, and toured with the group as DJ and as second-chair beatboxer (behind Rahzel).

By 1998, Scratch joined The Roots as a full-time member, a position he would hold for two of the group's most acclaimed records, Things Fall Apart and Phrenology. He released the well-received solo album, The Embodiment of Instrumentation in 2002, one of the first all-beatbox records, and the following year left the group to pursue his own sound. While he displayed his talent in fields ranging from pop to jazz over the next six years, he didn't release a sophomore solo effort until 2009's Loss 4 Words. A diverse record aiming for a newer, more universal sound, featuring guest shots ranging from the ubiquitous Kanye West to fellow Philadelphian Musiq Soulchild to alt-rock gadfly Damon Albarn, along side Fabulous, Donyute, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Smif ‘n Wesson and many more. This record truly furthered Scratch's rep as a musical explorer.

During and after touring with the world famous “Roots”, Scratch has shared stages alongside Ludacris, Jay-Z, Eminem, James Brown, Usher, and Kanye West to name a few. Scratch has also appeared on various mixtapes and has guest appeared on platinum albums along with winning a Grammy Award.

KYPRIOS:

The classic definition of the term MC is one that has the ability to grip a mic and control the crowd, and Kyprios has more than earned this title. He is a commanding presence on stage – able to hold the crowd in silent rapture as he drops an introspective piece that draws heavily from spoken word, only to suddenly flip it and incite a sea of thrusting hands with a rapid fire set of punchline-laden lyrical flows. Able to deliver a seamless blend of rapping, singing and harmonizing, the North Vancouver, BC native’s larynx is a potent stash of varied lyrical weapons.

On a roadtrip to New York City with Prevail from Swollen Members, the aspiring MC/actor/poet was compelled to lengthen his stay in hip hop’s Mecca. Studying theatre at HB Studios in Greenwich Village, hitting monthly rap battles anywhere in NYC and participating in poetry slams at the Nuyorican Poetry Cafe, the young artist was learning amongst the most reputed craftsman and developing his trade amongst them. Winning a poetry slam with a controversial spoken word piece “Hate,” Kyprios headed back to his hometown of North Vancouver to transfer his education into practice. Kyprios released the independent EP “Mic Tease” that would be the catalyst to get him performing numerous club shows and begin to host a weekly open mic poetry series dubbed “Come With It” in Vancouver.

During this period, Kyprios was also a founding member of the two time Juno-nominated Sweatshop Union. While working within the group, Kyp maintained his solo identity and continued to write and record his own material. This output included three tracks featured on the Local 604 album, which was released by BattleAxe Records. BattleAxe also selected Kyp’s song “Master” for inclusion on their Lyrics Of Fury compilation.

Kyprios’ solo work caught the attention of Sony Music Canada when he sent the company a package containing some tracks and a video of the slam winning, spoken word piece “Hate.” Kyp signed with the label and began a tumultuous period trying to do the impossible: make commercially viable underground music satisfying a record label and his core fans. He also offered outside help on Sweatshop Union’s juno nominated “Natural Progression” from Toronto at this time. His solo effort resulted in the two time, Juno nominated “Say Something,” featuring production from Saukrates (Kardinal Offishall, Method Man), Billy Mann (Pink, Kelly Rowland), Rob The Viking (Swollen Members) and good friend Tawgs (Lights, K’Naan). With the unfortunate timing of the industry’s changing climate, Sony Canada was merged into BMG and Kyprios’ solo record was shelved but his career was not.

Kyprios moved back to Vancouver, re-joined Sweatshop Union to begin a rigorous touring schedule and put out the Juno nominated “United We Fall,” and the critically acclaimed “Water Street” albums. He recently released a new solo offering entitled “12:12″ which propelled him into a radio competition for one hundred thousand dollars in Vancouver, through the Peak radio station called the Peak Performance Project. Kyprios eventually went on to win this prestigious competition and recognizes this experience as the most informative/beneficial of his career.

Kyprios has toured all over North America solo and as part of Sweatshop Union with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Busta Rhymes, Wyclef Jean, The Roots, Rakim, Living Legends, Swollen Members and Jurassic Five to name a few. He has made numerous appearances in television and film and is one of the voices for Michael Jordan’s website jumpman23.com. Kyp has won a Jesse for his musical work in a play called “Cranked”, has licensed music to MTV’s “The Buried Life” and continues to write for/with many artists. He still writes poetry and is eagerly anticipating the release of his next major project “The Midnight Sun.” He is currently working on the music for a new play with Greenthumb entitled “Ash Rizin.’”

Canada's #1 DJ Duo... Team Canada DJ's make their triumphant return to Victoria to rock the hell outta Club 9ONE9 on April 21st. It's been a minute since the fellas have been in Victoria... and for good reason.. they've been busy ripping up dancefloors all over Canada and appearing at prestigious events in the US and abroad. When they're not throwing down the crazy hype party vibe they also spend time in the lab producing remixes and edits that are always in top rotation w/ the hottest DJ's everywhere.

Originally a battle DJ, D.R.one linked with producer DJ Grandtheft in Montreal. Realizing they had a creative style of club DJing in common, the duo began throwing fun parties all over the east coast. Eventually they formed the Team Canada DJ Crew in 2004 and released their all-remix whitelabel debut "Classic Material Volume 1". Team Canada have quickly established themselves as Canada's top club remixers and party DJs.

Blazing some of the hottest clubs worldwide with a unique mix of music, they have made their mark with a four turntable party set. Anyone who has ever been to a Team Canada party, know that you leave having partied hard, cheered hard, and danced to music you never imagined mixed together in the same night.

In late 2006, the late DJ AM signed TC to his Deckstar team in LA joining AM, Steve Aoki, Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, and more. They have since moved on to start their own crew. TC signed 4 top DJs in Canada including Jr. Flo (Toronto) Illo (Ottawa) Pump (Calgary) and Hedspin (Vancouver), forming their own crew/management agency: The Eh! Team.

On March 24th, 2011 Luke Boyd, aka Classified, is set to embark on a national 22 date tour in support of his major label release Hand Shakes and Middle Fingers (Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc.), in stores March 22nd, 2011.

GZA:
True genius cannot be rushed. In the case of the legendary lyricist GZA, time has always been on his side. With Pro Tools, GZA’s latest release and fifth solo album courtesy of renowned indie Babygrande Records, the masterful MC adds yet another lyrically stunning LP to his rich musical catalogue. For the past 15 years, GZA has been stretching the sensibility of modern-day hip-hop with his finely crafted, thought provoking wordplay which he credits to his willingness to delve deep into the written word.

After moving from Brooklyn to Staten Island around the age of 9, GZA developed an interest in hip-hop by attending block parties as a child in the late '70's. He formed a three-man group with his cousins, who would later be known as RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard. The group, All in Together Now, saw the three rapping and DJing, switching off names and performing local shows; since they lived in different boroughs, RZA and Dirty would travel out to Staten Island to meet up with their cousin, after which the three would travel across NYC and challenge other MCs to battles. After some years of this, GZA was signed to Cold Chillin' Records as a solo artist under the name The Genius. He put together an album called Words from the Genius, produced mostly by Easy Mo Bee, but after it failed to sell well--and his rocky experience on tour--GZA became fed up and asked for release from the label.

After joining the Wu-Tang Clan, a group of nine which included himself, RZA and ODB, GZA boasted some high-profile appearances on the group's debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, including a solo track, "Clan in da Front." This was followed up in 1995 with GZA's sophomore solo effort, Liquid Swords, produced entirely by RZA; the album was met with critical and commercial acclaim, and is still considered one of the best albums to come out of the Wu-Tang camp; in 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source Magazine's 100 Best Rap Albums of all time.

After appearing on the Wu-Tang Clan's second album, Wu-Tang Forever, GZA released Beneath the Surface in 1999. Reviews were mostly positive, though it failed to live up to Liquid Swords' acclaim or commercial success. Like the sophomore projects of many Clan members, critics decried the album's lack of RZA production, claiming the underground producers and Wu-Elements used did not live up to the producer's skill level. GZA put in appearances on The W, Iron Flag and some of his group members' solo projects, but did not release another of his own until 2002 with Legend of the Liquid Sword. The album was received well by critics, but did not achieve commercial success, failing to go gold as his previous release had. GZA spent 2004 touring, both solo and with the Clan, and made an appearance with RZA in Jim Jarmusch's film Coffee & Cigarettes, opposite Bill Murray.

In 2005, GZA and DJ Muggs (the producer for Cypress Hill) released the LP Grandmasters. Muggs provided all the beats for the album, which saw GZA using chess as a metaphor for the rap game. The album received very positive reviews and modest commercial success. He then partook in the recording of groupmate Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II.

2007 saw GZA teaming up with his Wu-Tang Clan to record the group album 8 Diagrams, and in the ensuing controversy, defended both Raekwon and Ghostface Killah's rights to speak their mind, and RZA's production job on the album. In the summer of 2008, he released the album Pro Tools which featured production from Black Milk and past collaborators Jay "Waxxx" Garfield, RZA, Mathematics and True Master.

In 2009, GZA made appearances on two more Wu-Tang Clan albums. The first being on a song entitled "Stomp Da Roach" on the album Dopium, by fellow clan member U-God, the other being appearances on the tracks "We Will Rob You", "Rockstars" and "House of Flying Daggers", on Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II. The Genius continued to tour during the year, appearing on the "Rock The Bells" lineup and also performing at the NXNE music festival in Canada. Recently, RZA confirmed that he will be producing Liquid Swords II: The Return Of The Shadowboxer, which is tentatively due out in Fall of 2010.[8] The GZA also made an appearance in a video for Devendra Banhart's song titled "Baby". For Liquid Swords II, he has recently confirmed with Examiner.com that Killah Priest will hold a solo song ala 'B.I.B.L.E.' to act as the closer to the album just like the original. He will also be appearing on the upcoming collaboration album between producers Pete Rock & DJ Premier V.S. album appearing on Premier's track. Throughout the years GZA has maintained a reputation as a skilled wordsmith with a highly recognizable and authoritative delivery.

Souls of Mischief’s first LP, 93 'Til Infinity (Jive, 1993) debuted at #14 on Billboard's R&B charts, placing at 109 in the top 200. Their second album, No Man's Land (Jive, 1995) came in at #27 on the R&B charts. In 1995, Souls of Mischief members A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai joined forces with the other members of the Hieroglyphics crew including Del, Domino, Pep Love, and Casual to create a new independent label- Hieroglyphics Imperium- to publish and market the collective's, and individual members', releases. In 1998 Hieroglyphics released Third Eye Vision, their first album as a group. Souls of Mischief also released Focus in 1998, the first album on which they exercised complete creative and marketing control over their own material. In 2000 SOM followed up with the LP Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution. Hieroglyphics released their second group album, Full Circle, in 2003. In the midst of touring and recording, Souls of Mischief remained active as a group as the members released solo projects including Tajai’s Power Movement (2004), Opio’s Triangulation Station (2005), A-Plus’ My Last Good Deed (2007), and Opio’s Vulture’s Wisdom, Volume 1 (2008). Montezuma’s Revenge is a futuristic return to the vintage Souls of Mischief sound, with stellar production from A-Plus, Domino and Prince Paul (De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School), who brings his unique comedic bent to the project. Even the most die-hard Hieroglyphics fan will agree after sampling Montezuma’s Revenge – it was worth the wait.

MISTAH F.A.B.

One of the most prominent and colorful figures of the San Francisco Bay Area hyphy movement in the late 2000s -- sometimes hailed as the scene's "crown prince" -- North Oakland-based rapper Mistah F.A.B. presents a somewhat exceptional combination of street credibility, social consciousness, astute introspection, and irrepressible goofiness. Born Stanley P. Cox in 1982 and raised by his mother and grandmother, he stresses the positivity of hyphy's party-happy, irreverent, but inspirational "go dumb" mentality and manifests a dedication to inner-city social issues, which doesn't mean he's immune to a certain amount of mainstream rap's flamboyant materialism: his handle is supposedly an acronym for "Money Is Something to Always Have -- FaEva After Bread." F.A.B., who also goes by Fabby Davis, Jr., titled his second album Son of a Pimp in bluntly literal reference to his pimp father, who was incarcerated for much of F.A.B.'s childhood and died of AIDS-related complications when his son was 12, around the time he started writing rhymes. That album, F.A.B.'s first for hyphy forerunner Mac Dre's Thizz label (following his 2003 debut, Nig-Latin), featured collaborations with many noted Bay Area rappers including Dre, E-40, Turf Talk, and G-Stack of Oakland heroes the Delinquents -- as well as Kanye West -- and boasted one of the biggest hits of the resurgent hyphy scene, "Super Sic wit' It."

In 2006, F.A.B. became the subject of a major-label bidding war, signing with Atlantic Records that September, but a series of obstacles hindered his career momentum. KMEL-FM, the Bay's top urban station, imposed an unofficial but crippling blacklist of F.A.B.'s songs and guest appearances, due to petty personal grievances as well as the perceived slight of his successful show on a rival station, thereby significantly undermining his hometown visibility. Later, his breakout single, "Ghost Ride It," was the subject of controversy on two fronts - national clamor over the hyphy practice of "ghost riding" described in the song (throwing a car in neutral, then jumping out and walking alongside or riding on the roof as it continues to move), and threatened legal action from Columbia Pictures over the use of the Ghostbusters logo in the video (the track samples the movie's theme song) - which caused the video to be first heavily censored and then pulled from TV altogether.

Warren Griffin III (born November 10, 1970) better known by his stage name Warren G, is an American West Coast rapper and hip hop producer. He is Dr. Dre's step brother. His biggest hit to date was the single "Regulate" with Nate Dogg released in 1994. The Grammy nominated song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1990, Warren G formed the group 213 with Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg. In 1992, Warren G introduced the group to his brother Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre was impressed and signed Snoop Dogg to his and Suge Knight's record company, Death Row Records. Thus, 213 broke up for a while before releasing any group records, and the three artists pursued separate careers in the same style. Even though Death Row Records did not sign Warren G, his career began with some contributions to Dr. Dre's album The Chronic, released 1992. Warren G was a regular contributor to many Death Row albums.

In 1993, Warren G produced the track "Indo Smoke" featuring himself, Nate Dogg, and Mista Grimm. He also produced and rapped on Snoop Dogg's debut album Doggystyle.

Warren G's debut album Regulate... G Funk Era was released in 1994 on Def Jam. It was certified triple platinum in the United States and sold over 4.5 million units on soundscan worldwide. It featured the hit song "Regulate" featuring Nate Dogg, which samples Michael McDonald's classic hit, "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)." The lead single "Regulate" was certified platinum and peaked out at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also on that disc was "This D.J.," a popular, track and hit video on MTV, and also a chart hit, peaking at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and being certified gold.

He followed up with Take a Look Over Your Shoulder (Reality) in 1997, which took his mellow approach and brought it even further into the mainstream. Scoring a hit with a rap remake of "I Shot the Sheriff," which became another top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold, the album was a commercial success achieving platinum status.

Public Enemy transcends the confines of rap and pop music, remaining one of the African American community’s most important messengers, digital music’s greatest champions, and a rare rap group who need not rely on misogynistic and pro-violent lyrics. The group burst onto both the rap and pop music world in 1987 with their first single, “Public Enemy #1,” a startling combination of Chuck D’s commanding orations, Hank Shocklee’s layered cacophony of musical noise, and Flavor Flav’s show-stopping antics to keep the message entertaining. The song is not only known for introducing a whole new sound to the rap genre, but for giving the group their name.

Public Enemy rewrote the rules of hip-hop, becoming the most influential and controversial rap group of the late '80s and, for many, the definitive rap group of all time. Building from Run-D.M.C.'s street-oriented beats and Boogie Down Productions' proto-gangsta rhyming, Public Enemy pioneered a variation of hardcore rap that was musically and politically revolutionary. With his powerful, authoritative baritone, lead rapper Chuck D rhymed about all kinds of social problems, particularly those plaguing the black community, often condoning revolutionary tactics and social activism. In the process, he directed hip-hop toward an explicitly self-aware, pro-black consciousness that became the culture's signature throughout the next decade. Musically, Public Enemy were just as revolutionary, as their production team, the Bomb Squad, created dense soundscapes that relied on avant-garde cut-and-paste techniques, unrecognizable samples, piercing sirens, relentless beats, and deep funk. It was chaotic and invigorating music, made all the more intoxicating by Chuck D's forceful vocals and the absurdist raps of his comic foil Flavor Flav. With his comic sunglasses and an oversized clock hanging from his neck, Flav became the group's visual focal point, but he never obscured the music. A wise man once wrote that it was the fate of modern man to live with death from adolescence until it arrives. The only life giving assurance to this human state is to accept the terms of death, to live with it as immediate danger, to set out on the uncharted journey into rebellion, to encourage the psychopath in oneself. One is a rebel or one conforms. At one time in his life, Ko had chosen to live with immediate danger, and this state is vividly reflected in his music.

Ko Kapches was raised in a middle-class Greek family in the Queen and Broadview area in Toronto, Ontario. After falling into the trap of using and selling a wide variety of drugs as a 14-year-old, he soon found himself on an odyssey of rehabilitation centres across the United States. "I lived on the streets of San Francisco for a little bit until I eventually got in touch with my parents after a few weeks," Ko explains. "My father flew out and took me home, but I started living on the streets of Toronto anyways."

Ko spent much of his time with friends in small studios, crafting his talents as a rapper while beginning to write songs and playing guitar. Ko began to develop his own unique style he refers to as both urban funk and urban folk.

"I like to think of myself as a folk musician. But I'm not singing about country folk things, I'm singing about city folk things. I didn't come from an impoverished background, but I still see things on the street every day."

While Ko is still influenced by Toronto's underground rap community, he also enjoys more mainstream rap and ranks such diverse artists as Everlast, Kid Rock, Ani DiFranco, Thelonious Monk and Van Morrison among his favourites. He even has a tattoo of a lyric from Neil Young's "Down by the River" on his chest, Be on my side, I'll be on your side.

Ko’s eclectic taste is reflected in the originality of his organic sound.

"I want people to turn their heads — love it or hate it," Ko says of his craft. "People say, 'Where can I get your CD? I've never heard this kind of stuff.'"

"I wrote some songs on the album when I was 18, but they still mean as much to me now as they did back then, especially when I play them for people who haven't heard them before. They didn't know that it was written four years ago. And even if they do, they can still sing along and enjoy it."

In 2006 Sweatshop Union hit the road in the United States for the first time, giving their American fans a taste of what is to come. Since then, Sweatshop has rocked over 100 shows a year, a pace that that they have no intention of letting up.

Despite their heavy touring schedule Sweatshop Union still found time to record the 23 tracks that make up their latest album, which is almost entirely produced by members of the group. Water Street hits Canadian streets and online retailers on August 5th and will reach store shelves in the USA & internationally on October 14th, further solidifying their position as one of Canada's top selling independent hip hop artists. Cousin of renowned West Coast Pioneering Rapper Ice Cube, Del tha Funky Homosapien was born in Oakland, CA. and got his start writing songs for Ice Cube’s group, Da Lench Mob. But Del's rap isn't as grim or violent as Ice Cube's is, in fact, he's been known to include something in his music that's far too uncommon in most rap: humor!! Signed to Elektra/Asylum, Del's debut release, 'I Wish My Brother George Was Here', was issued in 1991 and produced by Cube and like most rap at the time, featured numerous samples of Parliament Funkadelic classics from the '70s. Del's follow-up, 1994's 'No Need for Alarm', was a departure musically, as Ice Cube was no longer in the production seat and the P-Funk sounds were dropped in favor of a more sophisticated, almost jazzy sound. Despite his noble experimentation, Del's sophomore effort failed commercially, as it would take four years for the rapper to plot his next move and issue another recording.

Having left Elektra, Del aligned himself closely to a few fellow rapper friends, Casual and Souls of Mischief, and issued his third release overall, 1998's 'Future Development', for the same label as his friends, Hieroglyphics Records. 2000 saw the release of an all-new Del solo release, 'Both Sides of the Brain', as well as a self-titled debut release by a side project, 'Deltron 3030', which saw Del join forces with both Dan The Automator and Kid Koala.

It took eight years for the rapper's next solo full-length to come out, but in the interim Del kept himself busy with guest appearances, including on the Damon Albarn project Gorillaz's self-titled debut, adding his recognizable vocals to the hit "Clint Eastwood," a song that he also began incorporating in his live sets. In 2007 it was announced that the MC had been signed to Def Jux, who released the long-awaited (and very un-Def Jux-like) 'Eleventh Hour' in March of 2008. In '09 Del bucked the trend and offered the whole album, 'Funk Man (the stimulus package)' for FREE download on his website. He also released another full length album 'Automatik Statik' which you could download for how whatever you wanted to pay... although he did set a base price of $3 !! 2010 rolls around and Del teams up with Artifacts member Tame One for the collaboration album Parallel Uni-Verses which has garned critical acclaim since it's release.

BEATNUTS:

Both Junkyard Juju and Psycho Les grew up in different communities in Queens, New York. Psycho Les started producing beats and DJing at age 15 under aliases including DJ Les Jams and DJ Incredible. At a high school in Flushing, Queens, a friend DJ Loco Moe introduced Les to fellow producer Juju. While crate digging, both Beatnuts ran into hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. Bambaataa introduced them to fellow Native Tongues including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers. At this time, Juju and Psycho Les were DJing parties under the alias Beat Kings. The Jungle Brothers claimed that they were not kings, but rather two nuts for their comical nature. They thus changed their name and it stuck. The two Beatnuts members later met up with rapper Kool Fashion.

The Beatnuts entered the recording industry in 1990 producing two tracks for the electronica group Stereo MCs. Over the next two years, they produced songs for rappers including Common, Pete Nice and Kurious, as well as a full album for Chi-Ali. As of 1992, Juju had not appeared MCing on a record, but fellow Beatnuts rappers Fashion and Psycho Les layed lyrics on tracks that he produced. In 1993, The Beatnuts produced more songs for the artists they had previously collaborated with as well as Fat Joe and Da Youngstas. At the same time, The Beatnuts made their name as remix specialists by remixing songs for MC Lyte, Da Lench Mob, Naughty by Nature and others.

The Beatnuts' early production work earned them a record deal with Combat Records in 1992. The Beatnuts planned on releasing a "mini-LP" through that label, but its release was delayed when Kool Fashion was sentenced to six months of jail for drug convictions. After Fashion completed his sentence, The Beatnuts signed deals with Violator Management and Relativity Records. On April 6, 1993, The Beatnuts released their debut album, 'Intoxicated Demons: The EP'. It featured 11 songs, including the two singles 'Reign of the Tec' and 'No Equal.' The album was characterized by its hedonistic party-style lyrics and sample-heavy jazz beats. It was a critical success receiving favorable reviews by Allmusic, The Source and Entertainment Weekly.

'Intoxicated Demons' was followed in 1994 with the eponymous full length album 'The Beatnuts: Street Level'. 'Street Level' followed its preceding EP in style, but slightly surpassed its commercial success by charting on the Billboard 200. It featured two singles, 'Props Over Here' and 'Hit Me with That'. 'Street Level' was the last Beatnuts album released before Fashion left the group to become a devout Muslim and solo artist under the alias Al' Tariq. He left The Beatnuts on good terms and has since collaborated with his former group on future albums.

The Beatnuts didn't follow up their '94 album until releasing 'Stone Crazy' in '97. It contained 'Off the Books', a single that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and featured the first on-record performance by the now legendary Big Pun.

1998 saw the release of 'The Spot', a remix EP that revamped favorite songs from the first three non-instrumental Beatnuts albums. It additionally featured sequels to older Beatnuts tracks and one new song, 'Treat$'. It was released in anticipation of 1999's 'A Musical Massacre', The Beatnuts' most commercially and critically successful album. 'A Musical Massacre' reached #35 on the Billboard 200 due to its hit single 'Watch Out Now'. The album is hailed for its eclectic and textured beats as well as its rough, rugged, and raunchy lyrics with slightly more content variation than past releases.

After Sony released The Beatnuts's first hits compilation, 'World Famous Classics', The Beatnuts did not record another album until 2001's 'Take It or Squeeze It'. Their 2001 album contained the singles, 'No Escapin' This' and 'Let's Git Doe.'

In 2002, they released 'The Originators' and next up was their 2004 album 'Milk Me' which contained the song 'Confused Rappers', featuring Rahzel and Grandmaster Roc Raida, a track that dissed Jennifer Lopez for essentially stealing the beat from The Beatnuts' 'Watch Out Now' on her hit 'Jenny from the Block'. The song criticizes Lopez's singing ability and looks, but ultimately criticizes the track's producers--Trackmasters and Cory Rooney--for stealing the beat. Although The Beatnuts did eventually receive royalties, Psycho Les is still critical of the track's producers. 'Milk Me' also featured 'Find Us (In the Back of the Club)' featuring the up and coming Akon, a catchy track that was welcomed by hip hoppers and clubbers alike and left dance floors burning worldwide.

In 1993, hip-hop would be forever changed by the emergence of the gritty, Shaolin style of the seminal rap clique, the Wu-Tang Clan. Straight from the streets of Staten Island , New York , a unique conglomerate of nine individually exceptional lyricists flourished. Fondly referred to as the Wu; RZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, GZA, U-God, Masta Killa, and Ol' Dirty Bastard, released the epic album Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. This debut garnered rave reviews because it provided listeners with a fresh approach to hip-hop. Moreover, the Wu set trends in a time when hip-hop's radio play and sales were championed largely by west coast artists.

The Wu style was soon imitated. Their grimy, sparse beats and incredibly diverse lyrical flows, which creatively drew from Kung-Fu flicks, became the musical blueprint for many hip-hop cliques. To this day, the Wu-Tang's impact on hip-hop culture is unyielding. The Wu not only influenced the state of music as a group but also as individuals. Each members is possessed his own exceptional characteristics which attracted cult followings. Raekwon (the Chef), one of the nine talented emcees, shined as the purist of lyricists. When the time came for him to release his first solo album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (1995), hip-hop, once again, underwent a momentous transformation. To give an accurate analogy Cuban Linx is to albums what Scarface is to movies. In fact, this classic album, which went gold in three days moves from track to track like a film moves from scene to scene. With its invigorating instrumentals and dramatic lyrical tales, Raekwon painted vivid pictures and presented powerful imagery through his enchanting verbal expression.

Rae's ground breaking debut album helped to bring the flavour of flossing to wax as well as the use of the moniker among Wu brethren and other prominent emcees. The single "Verbal Intercourse" featured the first appearance of Nas Escobar, Nas' alter ego. Similarly, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, who served as Rae's partner in rhyme throughout the entire Cuban Linx album, also developed a slew of other identities. Identities like Lex Diamond, one of the flashy, witty and intellectually stimulating personas of the multifaceted Raekwon.

In the years after the release of Cuban Linx, Raekwon continued to record several albums with the Clan including the platinum Wu-Tang Forever (1997) and The W (2000), as well as the gold Iron Flag (2001). He also starred in the critically acclaimed film Black and White, before releasing his second solo album, Immobilarity in 1999. Four years later another masterpiece from Raekwon was released in The Lex Diamond Story. Fast forward to 2009 and after crazy mixtapes and collabos Raekwon finally drops 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx pt. II' which has been speculated upon for many years, tracks leaked and release dates published, then always pushed back. Many feared it would never see the light of day, banished to come out in the fifth quarter of Nevuary. Finally, 14 years after the original, it's here, and it's well worth the wait. Cinematic drug-kingpin rap set to rugged New York beats as grimy as the Park Hill Projects on a cold winter night, it is exactly what we all hoped it would be. Rae's lyricism sounds just as raw as it did back in '95, proving that he hasn't lost a step when it comes to hyper-vivid storytelling.

In the early nineties emcees Suffa and Pressure met at a high school in the hills of Adelaide, South Australia. Later introduced by a mutual friend to DJ Debris, the trio found common ground with their love of Hip Hop.

When the trio conspired to add their own chapter to Hip Hop’s canon, the Hilltop Hoods were born. Applying their own personal experience to the music that inspired them, the Hoods set out to represent their world.

When the crew’s first EP ‘Back Once Again’ dropped in 1997, the nimble flows and stunning beats declared the arrival of a significant new force in Australian Hip Hop. More importantly, it laid down a gauntlet to an industry that had ignored this burgeoning movement in Australian music for too long. Over beats that celebrated the traditions of funk, jazz and soul, Suffa and Pressure displayed an instinctive rhyme chemistry that has remained as tight as it is intense.

The Hoods have grown in both stature and skill through five full length albums – ‘A Matter of Time’ (1999), ‘Left Foot, Right Foot’ (2001), ‘The Calling’ (2003), ‘The Hard Road’ (2006) and their latest ‘State Of The Art’ (2009) – the first release on the bands own Label ‘Golden Era Records’.

While they have drawn on a broad range of influences, they have never lost touch with the unique flavour they created in the Adelaide Hills as young Hip Hop fans. With an ethos that is innovative and fearless, Hilltop Hoods’ inspirational sound has been embraced far beyond Hip Hop’s loyal underground. Natural Progression, Sweatshop's sophomore album, hit streets in 2004 and cemented their position as a group to be reckoned with. More videos and touring followed; Sweatshop crisscrossed Canada, headlining several tours and also touring as the opening act for the Black Eyed Peas. Critical acclaim grew, and both college and commercial radio gave Sweatshop tracks substantial airtime. Nominations for a Juno Award (the Canadian Grammy), a MuchMusic Video Award, Canadian Radio Music Awards, and more piled up. Recognizing the appeal of Sweatshop Union's music, music supervisors used their music in dozens of films, television shows, and video games, creating even more international awareness.

2005 brought the release of the third Sweatshop Union album, United We Fall, featuring collaborations with Rob The Viking, Mad Child (Swollen Members) and DJ Revolution (The World Famous Wake Up Show). Canada was blanketed, more albums were sold, more audiences were rocked, and more accolades (including nominations for another Juno Award and MuchMusic Video Award) were received. In 2006 Sweatshop Union hit the road in the United States for the first time, giving their American fans a taste of what is to come. Since then, Sweatshop has rocked over 100 shows a year, a pace that that they have no intention of letting up.
